I followed the steps to start a a new slave replication server according to https://www.percona.com/doc/percona-xtrabackup/2.1/howtos/setting_up_replication.html
When the slave is started it says x table does not exist. My question is if the backup has to be restored in the slave server before starting the replication. I don’t see that in the procedure shown so I really don’t know what I am missing.

Yes. First you need to restore the backup on the slave server. Then, when mysql is running with all the data, you run the CHANGE MASTER and connect it to the master. If you don’t follow that order, then you are just connecting an empty slave with a master and it will fail. So first, restore the backup.
