Hourly Mysql backup

Hi,

I’ve a question about making Mysql backups and in case of a disaster loose at max 1 hour of activity.
My concrete question is: is it safe (performance wise) to execute every hour a ‘fluhs-logs’ command and rsync the the binary-logs files to an external backup device?
What could be the drawbacks of such a procedure?

I know about slave setups but the customer wants the backup to be kept externally.

Thanks in advance.

regards,

Ivan

I don’t see any drawbacks for what you are asking for. Indeed this is scenario is very well explained in a white paper Percona has in Resources tab of their website (https://www.percona.com/resources/my…best-practices). There you can find the definition of RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective)

There are three question that you can make yourself that will help you to design your Backup and Recovery System:

I truly recommend you reading that document.

PS: Master-Slave setup it’s not a replacement for a proper backup it may help for disaster recovery.
