XtraBackup on a remote node?

We use XtraBackup to perform regular full backups and also to prepare clones to init a replication slave. This works fine as long as you have sufficient disk space to hold 2 copies of your data on a given node. As my data grows I’ll reach a point where I can’t clone the data locally and then ship it to the slave. I’ve looked around but can only find instructions for performing the backups locally - I’d like to do a remote XtraBackup to the slave (who is waiting with an empty disk) similar to the way PXC does SST exchanges. Are there examples of how to use XtraBackup manually between nodes outside of SST ?

It seems I didn’t look hard enough: found instructions here: http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-xtrabackup/2.1/howtos/recipes_ibkx_stream.html
