PMM Server upgrade fails with "Internal server error" during 3.4.0 → 3.9.0 update

Environment:

  • PMM Server current version: 3.4.0 (September 8, 2025)
  • Target update version: 3.9.0 (July 30, 2026)
  • Update method: In-UI update via “Update now” (Step 1 of 2: Update PMM Server)
  • Deployment type: [Docker / OVA / AMI / Podman — fill in yours]

Issue description:
I initiated the PMM Server update from 3.4.0 to 3.9.0 via the UI. The update starts (data collection pauses as expected), but partway through it fails with a generic “Internal server error” message, with no further detail shown in the UI.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. On PMM Server 3.4.0, go to Home dashboard — update banner shows 3.9.0 available.
  2. Click Update now under “Step 1 of 2: Update PMM Server”.
  3. Update process begins.
  4. UI displays “Internal server error” and the update does not complete.

Current status:
PMM Server itself is currently running fine (still on the old/current state), but I’m unable to complete the upgrade to 3.9.0.

What I need help with:

  • I tried checking /srv/logs/pmm-update-perform.log to find the root cause, but this file doesn’t exist on my instance.
  • Could someone confirm the correct log location for update failures in this version, or help identify why the update fails with this generic error?
  • Is this a known issue with the 3.4.0 → 3.9.0 upgrade path specifically?

Any guidance on which logs to check or how to retry the update safely would be appreciated.

Before and even after upgrade attempt PMM is running fine:

Hello @Naresh9999

UI upgrades are no longer supported from 3.9.0

Starting with PMM 3.9.0 (expected July 2026), you will no longer be able to upgrade PMM Server from the web interface.

You might want to try Manual upgrade

Take the backup before the upgrade.
