Can I take a hotbackup of MySQL 5.5.46 and restore to MariaDB 10.x

Hi,
I want to migrate to MariaDB 10.x in the long run whereas I’m currently on MySQL community 5.5.46
My data size is about 20 GB which makes mysqldump or mydumper+myloader impossibly slow (2-3 hours for restore)
Xtrabackup is a doing a great job (~15 min total)

So, can I take a hotbackup of MySQL 5.5.46 and restore to MariaDB 10.x ?

If a single version of PXB does this that would be great, but if I have to use one version of PXB to backup and another to restore, that’s obviously not a problem.
But can it be done?

Or are the data formats too incompatible?

Thanks in advance.
