We have an MySQL master-master replication setup with mysql-mmm in Ubuntu 20.04. We recently upgraded from CentOS 6 and MySQL 5.6 and kept most of the settings. Both of the machines have 48GB of memory, 10 CPU’s and contains 250GB in of data in \>100.000 tables spread over \>400 databases. But after the upgrade we are experiencing a couple of freezes per day, on the active and passive server. Tcpdump is showing me that the queries (from mysql-mmm control vps) are coming and going, but it just takes a longer time and then the timeout of 10 seconds just kicks in. slow log starts with a lot of “SHOW SLAVE STATUS” and after that a INSERT’s and a few DELETE calls, but not a single ‘normal’ SELECT query. How can we debug this? You should look into either using Percona XtraDB Cluster + ProxySQL, or if you want to keep the master/master, check out [Orchestrator](https://github.com/openark/orchestrator). You said you upgraded from MySQL 5.6. To what version? 5.7? 8.0? What does ‘SHOW PROCESSLIST’ give you during these events? ---

I know, the setup was made 5 years ago by the (managed) hosting company. I would rather now go with a Galera cluster, but the proposal has been shot down because there is no support by the (managed) hosting company (and indirect by the boss). > You said you upgraded from MySQL 5.6. So many posts are posted in the wrong places, I never assume and always ask. ‘Sleep’ means ‘idle’. means no activity happening. If you repeat show processlist and those numbers in the ‘Time’ column increase, then mysql isn’t frozen. I would enable all of the debugging logs possible for mysql-mmm and trace what is happening. Check ‘read\_only’ on mysql and see if mmm is setting this incorrectly. ---

If I understand this correctly, mmm is requesting ‘show slave status’, but mysql is taking a long time to reply, which causes mmm to timeout waiting for said reply? What happens when you run ‘show slave status’ manually? Does it return right away? ---

Yes, this is correct. But it only happens during the “freeze”. Normally the query returns instantly. I tried running the deadlock logger, but it didn’t log anything. ---

The deadlock logger is only for InnoDB and has nothing to do with “mysql”. Please explain “freeze”. I guess I’m not entirely understanding what is not working. During one of these “freeze” periods, can you still access the mysql CLI? If so, can you run SELECT queries directly? What about SHOW SLAVE STATUS? During a freeze, what does SELECT @@read\_only return for both nodes? ---

I have to write a script to catch this. Since it only “freezes” for 1 or 2 times a day. I’ll get those answers hopefully within a few days. ---

So i could catch it on the passive server. I created a script which would question every second the database with a “SHOW PROCESSLIST” query. If the script would catch a long running “SHOW SLAVE STATUS”, then another background process will try to execute another ‘SHOW SLAVE STATUS’. But that last query just stalls. I removed a lot of lines of this log, since a lot of entries are redundant. You clearly have some issue with replication status. I can only make educated guesses here. Each time SSS is ran, internal locks must acquired. Running SSS so frequently may be causing internal deadlocks (note I said _internal deadlocks_ and not SQL/InnoDB deadlocks, huge difference, as internal’s can’t be tracked) which is eventually crashing the server. I notice you have binlog\_gtid\_simple\_recovery=false, which is non-default. Any specific reason for this? I also do not see any GTID related options. As a final recommendation, I would switch to GTID-based replication, put the above parameter back to default (just remove it from my.cnf), and relax the frequency that which mmm polls the server. More long-term, switch off mmm and move to Orchestrator. Sorry for not having a silver bullet solution. I did enable the GTID-based replication and removed that flag. Now both the MySQL servers are running error free for 7 days, so i think that was it. Thanks for your help!
