# innobackupex or xtrabackup - What is the future?

Hello,  
sometimes ago i have read a message, that the innobackupex in near future should removed. I have a working script for making backups of my databases. When you planned the removing of this tool? Should I use xtrabackup to be secure in the future?

If you check latest versions of Percona XtraBackup, you will see that innobackupex is a symlink to xtrabackup.

```auto
total 143344
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Aug 30 12:14 innobackupex -> xtrabackup
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4435392 Aug 30 11:58 xbcloud
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3020 Aug 30 11:47 xbcloud_osenv
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4317475 Aug 30 11:58 xbcrypt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4359503 Aug 30 11:58 xbstream
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 133659394 Aug 30 12:11 xtrabackup

Beside this, new “options” if added will be available in xtrabackup not in innobackupex. For sure, you should update your script to use xtrabackup directly.
